Dewey, I thought you were dead???

Yes, things begin to look a little blurry when you spend hours on end inside the San Clemente Public Library paranoid and on alert. This is where we've been working every day since our boycott of Starbucks began over a week ago.

Although Stevie feels right at home studying her spanish and working on her writing, I have continual nightmare flashbacks from my personal wars that transpired on Library soil between the 2nd and 6th grade. Battles were won and lost on a weekly basis as I fought my arch-nemesis, the Dewey Decimal System.

Why Dewey? Why have you come back to haunt me? DEWEY, LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!

The Spirit of Aloha

Surfing Oceanside, CA
At it's best, surf culture cultivates the spirit of aloha. Granted, since people are involved in creating culture, it is rarely, if ever, at its best. Oh well.
The literal meaning of aloha is “the presence of breath” or “the breath of life.” It comes from “Alo,” meaning presence, front and face, and “ha,” meaning breath. Aloha is a way of living and treating each other with love and respect. Its deep meaning starts by teaching ourselves to love our own beings first and afterwards to spread the love to others.
Aloha is sending and receiving a positive energy. Aloha is living in harmony. When you live the Spirit of Aloha, you create positive feelings and thoughts, which are never gone. They exist in space, multiply and spread over to others.
Isn't that beautiful? -STEVIE

Introducing The Princess Crew

Tonight we had the privilege of hanging out with Kayden and Avary Simko. Their parents went out on the town and we had the house to ourselves. It was princess theme night and Stevie, Kayden, Avary, and Kiki made custom costumes and then proceeded to do fairy-princess-stuff like wave around magic wands and talk about glitter and ribbons. Awesome.
(Be sure to watch the Princess video below).

Tomorrow is Kayden's 7th birthday,
but we started the party early!

Life is a Beach

It feels so good to be back in Socal. We've got a great routine going and we've been getting our beach lurk on in a heavy way! Days start at 6am with strong coffee followed by a surf session at Trestles. While I surf Stevie walks Kiki. Then we work at the San Clemente Library until late afternoon. From there we move to Sano for a second surf session. Stevie likes to surf this wave. We eat dinner and at least one bottle of wine is consumed. Friends and family come and hang out. This will be our routine for the next month. We're in heaven!

Kiki's New Shoes

I own 3 pair of footwear. 1 pair of dress shoes, 1 pair of casual shoes, 1 pair of flip flops. I wear the flips 99.9% of the time. Stevie owns 37 pair of footwear. 19 pairs live in a storage unit in Compton and 18 pair live in the Sprinter. The 18 pair she has in the Sprinter are rotated on an outfit-by-outfit basis. It was only a matter of time before Kiki noticed her lack of apparel and accessories.

They came in a 4-pack. They are bright yellow. They have special protective soles with a cordura shell and a patented velcro paw-closure system. Witness the video of KIKI'S FIRST PAIR OF SHOES!

It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

It's no wonder to me that shows like Laverne and Shirley and movies like Thelma and Louise win generation after generation of fans; their appeal draws upon our common desire for love, understanding, and loyalty. That being said, I don't think that's why they're so popular. Hallmark cards and bank commercials do the same thing. These shows and movies are different. They get under our skin and resonate deep into our collective consciousness. In recent years, the sitcom Friends had the same incredible effect on people; that's why it lasted ten seasons. So, what is it? What's the secret ingredient to become memorable in the hearts and minds of millions? Silliness. Silliness is what we really want, folks. Other qualities are too vague, too intangible. Think freedom for instance; what's that? Silliness, on the other hand, is not only simple and self-evident, it makes the tragedies of life light enough to bear. It makes you laugh until your belly aches, your jaw hurts, tears stream down your face, and you think you just might pee your pants.  In short, no one dies over silliness. The only catch is that it takes a best friend to achieve the highest levels of it, as demonstrated by the pictures below. From the day we met, Reagan and I have been lightening each other's loads, restoring the other to sanity, and teaching each other about unconditional love and compassion. Most importantly, we are very, very silly together.

We're gonna do it
Give us any chance we'll take it
Read us any rule, we'll break it
We're gonna make our dreams come true
Doin' it our way

Hasen Pfeffer Incorporated!

There's nothing we won't try
Never heard the word "impossible"
This time there's no stoppin' us.
We're gonna do it

Nothing's gonna turn us back now
Straight ahead and on the track now
We're gonna make our dreams come true
Doin' it our way

And we'll do it our way, yes, our way
Make all our dreams come true
And we'll do it our way, yes, our way
Make all our dreams come true
For me and you!!!!

On your mark get set and go now
Got a dream and we just know now
We're gonna make that dream come true

Our newest addition to the Sprinter

When you live in a 90 square foot palace, every inch counts! Problems manifest when, in addition to cloths and daily living supplies, you’re also trying to carry around 7 surfboards, 2 bikes, 60 bottles of wine, 1 dog, and 18 pairs of ladies shoes. Over the last 10 months that we’ve been living in the van I recognized this issue and took action. Our new custom-built black powder-coated steel platform roof rack virtually doubles our living space. Now Stand-Up and long boards go on the roof and we have a Thule rocket box full of rock climbing, scuba diving, and camping gear.
The net results:
-Gas mileage decreased by 2-3 miles per gallon
-Stevie has better access to her shoe rack
-Kiki’s living space increased by approximately 4 square feet
-2 collapsible bikes can fit inside the cabin
-We now have a platform on the roof where we can watch the sunset
We are ready to head south! Our official border cross-over date into Baja Mexico is October 10th. Until then we’ll be enjoying the end of the California summer. We’ll be hanging out in San Clemente and Encinitas surfing at Trestles and Sano.

The problem, too many surf boards

The solution, custom roof rack

Would have been impossible without the help of experts

Installation was harder than I thought

Childhood Friends

We've been able to do some pretty darn cool things in San Francisco like spend time with old friends and.... meet one brand new one!!! As some of you know, Molly and Corby joined us on our first Grand Canyon trip together last October.  What none of us knew though was that Audrey, or Little Lava as we like to call her, joined us on that trip too. She was born just a couple weeks ago and has been mesmerizing all of us with her presence ever since. See the pictures and you'll know why.

Part of what makes this introduction so special is that Corby and Tree have been friends since they were kids themselves. They've grown together from boyhood to parenthood- Kiki and Audrey- the next generation :)

Bree and I before Wicked- still playing dress up after all these years.
My friend Brienna and I share the same lasting bond. We met when my family moved in across the street from her when I was seven and she was nine.  We used to roller skate with bloody knees, bake banana bread and eat the dough, walk dogs and wash cars for money, pretend to go to church on sundays but really go to Drug Emporium to buy Rachel Perry Banana Coconut lip gloss, and when her family moved away to Fort Bragg, we made each other mixed tapes of mostly Depeche Mode songs to keep us stuck together forevermore. Today, she too has a little girl, and she's teaching her all the games that we used to play.
As we prepare to head across the border we realize that it may be a long long time before we see these friends again. We'll miss them!  Stevie

"The Restaurant"... shhhh

There is all kind of restaurants. There are good restaurants and great restaurants, recommended restaurants, gourmet restaurants, the restaurant downtown, uptown, and across town. They serve home cooked meals, delicacies, things from the sea, things from far away lands, and special entrĂ©es you cannot pronounce. They use secret recipes flavored with spices and herbs you’ve never heard of. They pair meals with hand-selected vinos and deserts come with tiny little silver spoons.
I have been to all of these places. Yet there is one that stands apart. A place where you have to know someone who knows someone to even get the address. A place that doesn’t accept reservations.
The chef is so famous and recognized that he can hardly leave the united states without someone asking for his autograph. Yes, he shaves his legs, although in some countries they would call it “buzzing”. Yes, I personally saw this chef shove a Coors Lite up a chicken’s ass. That’s no joke. This guy WILL be cooking for the next President, of some small country.
I could tell you where to go… but then I’d have to kill you. All I can offer you is the proof. TREE

Big City Life

San Fran, urban bivy off Divisadero, drug deals in my front yard, Garbage trucks at 4am, Sushi with Mom, Ambian, Musicals, $4 cups of coffee, yellow cab, art gallery, one ways, babies. Kiki and I are out, heading to San Diego. Stevie is staying in San Fran for more fun. We'll regroup in a week in San Clemente. TREE

Saturday, August 14, 2010

Greetings! We're in freezing cold San Francisco for a few days experiencing the perks and pains of city life. So far, we're off to a good start. We went to see Wicked the musical at the Orpheum with Tree's mom, Angela, her dear friend John, and my childhood, amazing hat-making friend Brienna. The show brought Angela and I to tears. Of course, that doesn't really say much because we tend to cry a lot, but nonetheless, the costumes were gorgeous, the two leading ladies sang with incredible pathos, and the musical itself was funny while still considering some deeper philosophical questions.
Namely, the play asks whether or not the inherent nature of man is good or evil, or whether these qualities are thrust upon us by society. It also juxtaposes the idea of true goodness which is characterized by truth, justice, love, compassion, and integrity against the idea of perceived goodness, or what's popular and convenient to believe and do. It's an interesting thing to consider right now in San Francisco immediately after Prop 8 was repealed. In my loud and unwavering opinion, I see those fighting for equality in marriage as the legitimate ambassadors of goodness whereas those others, the prop 8 advocates who try to mask their prejudice in the name of goodness, as the truly wicked ones.

Anyway, more to come.....I misplaced the camera cord in order to download the photos, so these three will have to suffice for the time being.

Much love to ALL - Stevie

Farewell Wine Tour, and Goodbye Napa

We’ve reached the end of our amazing wine tasting adventure. For the last 4 months we’ve explored every wine region from LA to Canada and here are the final stats...

Tree/Stevie - 138 unique winery visits, 152 total wineries including repeats, 2 passport events, 3 library tastings, 8 barrel tasting events, 63 purchased bottles, 2 passouts (both by Stevie)

Kiki – 40 winery visits, 2 barrel tasting events, countless hours lurking in the front of un-dog friendly wineries

We gained a lot of knowledge on this trip. We learned that visiting 4 wineries in a day is tasting, 5-7 is drinking, and any more than 8 is considered an Extreme Sport requiring dedication and training. We learned to walk out anytime a room is pouring in plastic cups, even if it’s free.  We learned to swirl, swish, roll, and in Stevie’s case throw wine in order to aerate it (sorry about that Matt). We studied Bordeaux and Burgundy wines, dinking each with a thirst for understanding. When we started this trip all we knew was that we liked big reds, but today we understand that means a combination of the 5 noble varietals (Merlot, Cab Sauv, Malbec, Petit Verdot, & Cab Franc) in some blended form. We started off hating Pinot but grew to respect its complexity and fragility. Stevie also learned about growing conditions, soil, acidity, topography, climate, winemaking, world regions, and a bunch of other shit I’ll never remember.

What I really learned is that wine is a great metaphor for life. Some grapes do fine when they stand-alone. Others need to be surrounded in order to realize their true potential. Some prefer deep rich soil to stretch their roots. Others grow in shallow rocky terrain and thrive in the struggle. Some prefer hot days and cool nights while others need consistent temperatures. But no matter the grape and despite the individual experience, they all have one essence. To really understand wine beyond simply drinking it, you have to pull the essence out of it.  You have to use your mind, sight, smell, touch, and taste to explore the layers and unravel its secrets. I feel like truly experiencing your life requires the same approach.

And what do you find when you unravel a really good bottle of wine? What’s the essence? Quite simply, LOVE. In it’s purest form. In a true art form. From the vine to the chemistry lab, from the barrel to the bottle. Big grape or small grape, thick skin or thin skin, red, white, or rose, love is the main ingredient. Understanding and embracing that love is the only way to pull out the essence. And the same is true of life. In conclusion, I’m beginning to believe love is what we’re all made of as well.

We’d like to thank all the wonderful people who poured for us, drank with us, and educated us during this epic experience. A special thanks to the 40 wineries that let Kiki in! You made her trip. And to Matt and Pinda, we love you guys! Come drink with us in the Mendoza Valley!
