To our main readership, sorry in advance for the boring post.
We've received at least a dozen emails from people out there who are considering an extended road trip but have no idea how much it will cost. This post is for you. Maybe you're thinking about driving down the Pan American Highway to the tip of South America, or maybe you just want to drive around Mexico. How much you spend will depend on a lot of variables, including type of vehicle, amount of camping vs. hotels, and variety of entertainment. Here is what we've been spending since we crossed into Mexico on October 11th, 2010. Use it a a guide for your planning.
Note: Our food total includes alcohol, of which we drink a lot. We stay in hotels frequently and also eat out 50-60% of the time. In other words, it can be done cheaper. We live really well.

$543 - Food
$84 - Hotels
$113 - Camping
$215 - Gas
$44 - Road Tolls
$17 - Internet
$13 - Laundry
$1029 TOTAL

Tree,
You the man! This all looks Awesome... as long as you have a $45,000 sprinter:)

Best investment I ever made. I'll take the Sprinter over a house in the burbs any day!
Love that you put it all out there like this. We are hoping to do the same, a bit of evangelical work if you will, once we get 3-4 months to look at.
I love posts on tallied up numbers from others travels. Don't forget what it costs in your life as well (being away from family etc) :)
What does that Sprinter run on air? It costs us $300 just to fill up the tank on the Earthroamer, which would get us approx 800 miles. Perhaps we're overestimating how far we'll drive it in a month but I've budgeted at least twice that. This is good news however.
